Sullivan's Speaking in Sumy!!!

Week 44

So President and Sister Sullivan came to visit Sumy this weekend and they did an apartment check.  Elder Biesinger and I were scared out of our socks that the floor wouldnt be good enough, so we mopped it 4 times.  We have got a lot of good stuff going now.  Lena, an investigator given to us from the previous missionaries wants to be baptized, we had a lesson with her on Tuesday, and she said she could quit smoking in a week, tomorrow is the last day, last night on the phone she said she was down to just a few each day, and that she is on track.  She will be baptized on July 9th, in the Lake or River.  She was really excited.  Elder Montgomery is coming up next week to interview her.  Her Mom has been a member for 15 years and is very excited.  Lena herself has a family and we hope that the whole family will join, it is very happy.  If you didnt recieve a reply from me today, it is because I didnt have very much time to respond.  That is all the really important stuff from this week, I translated quite a bit, and that was a task.  Everything is going well, the weather is blazing hot, and we bought sunscreen. Love you all! Happy Birthday to Ollie and happy 10 Years Mom and Dad!

Hey buddy,

Wow I can't believe it has been 10 months already!  Time is flying by for sure.

Well, we have had a crazy busy week!  Grandma and Grandpa had their farewell today.  They both did a great job and the little kids sang a song.  Gethsemane...it was Cam. Kate, Kaestli, Brayden, zach and Cole.  They did a really good job.  I am going to try to send the video of it.  It is super cute.

Josh and Jordy spent the week at trek.  They survived!  Jordy became completely attached to Jessica Ralphs because she was his "ma".  They said they had a good time and everything went well.

Last Monday we had the Martineau Family party.  It was fun to see everyone.  We had cafe rio salads and everyone swam.  I am sending a few pictures of that.

Kaestli, Kate and lily did a photo shoot.  It was a tea party.  I think the pics will turn out super cute!

Mikey has big news!!!  They are having a boy!  Kaestli was DEVASTATED!!!  She honestly cried for a long time about it.  She wouldn't even look at Keely.  It was like she had been completely betrayed.  It was hilarious, we were laughing so hard.  The pic of Kaestli curled up is when she was melting down over it.  I think she is over it a bit now.  We bought the baby some clothes and a blanket to cheer her up.

Kirk and Luci came to the cabin for the farewell today.  It was fun to see them.

Dad and I have our 10 year anniversary coming up in a couple weeks!  We are trying to plan a little getaway.  I can't believe it has been 10 years.  We are doing really well, and very happy in our marriage.  Thank you for serving a mission, because it honestly has been a huge blessing to our marriage and family.

It is fun having 2 missionaries serving at the same time.  I am excited for G&G to go too...4 missionaries at once seems like a record!  They are getting excited...but nervous.  Tears are definitely starting to flow for some of them.

It was Ollie's birthday this week so you should give him a birthday shout out.  Also Cam's birthday is on Saturday.  He is getting baptized on his birthday.  We will head to Bear lake right after for Dad's family reunion.  So give him a shout out as well.

I have been working on your birthday package.  If you have any last minute requests this is your last chance.  I should be sending it out this week.

I got an awesome email from Sister Sullivan yesterday with a picture of you and a sweet message.  She said you have kept your apartment spotless (except for the dishes) and that you translated for her in the fireside.  I would give anything to be able to come to a fireside there...seriously!

I miss you like crazy.  I am so glad you are serving so righteously though.  You are the best.  I really love you so much.  I am so glad you are my son.  Thank you for everything you did for me growing up.

I got a cute friend request from Viktoria in Sumy on Facebook.  She sent me a great message and pictures too.  It totally made my week.  She seems so CUTE and so SWEET!!!  I loved her message in broken english.  I had her friend Julie Biesinger too.

Some of the missionary moms got together again for lunch.  I seriously love Julie Biesinger.  We are totally tight.  We met Sister Broadhead's mom too.  I found her by Facebook stalking.  Turns out she is a widow too and married to a widower.  I guess Sister Broadhead's mom died when she was young like you.  Her stepmom..my new friend was widowed with a 2 year old and she was pregnant too.  So we have a ton in common!  It was crazy.

I added $200.00 to your account so you can buy and send the stuff you wanted.  I loved the nesting dolls...so a couple more of those would be great.  Anything else you were thinking of too.

Alright...questions

Mom

Still happy and positive.  They came and it went really good, they got here just before the fireside, and left just after church the next day, they came and did an apartment inspection, everything is going really good.  Yes we had to set them and they were well attended.  WE play tennis, and then we do whatever we want.   WE walk around and talk to people, and sometimes we tract here.  Investigators are really good.  We see them a few times each week.  Yes, we usually have one family feed us each week.  Yes there are a few, Wild west, Vin and Gret, Mcdonalds, and a couple pizza places.  Pretty close.  No I am good, I love you and am way excited for Gramma and grandpa.  It is really nice having a mom like you who cares about me!

For Cam: Happy Birthday! I am so excited for you to get the Holy Ghost, who will baptize you? Are you excited? I love you and am so proud of you.

First Full Week in Sumy!

Week 43

This is the first wee that we have been able to spend entirely in Sumy, the city is awesome.  We did a lot of work and we were really struggling to reach our goals this week, on Friday night our goals just looked impossible, but we didnt give up, we cracked down on obedience, and prayed soooo... much on saturday, that we were able to almost meet our goal for other lessons, and hit our goal for new investigators.  We had another miracle lesson on sunday night about the plan of salvation, the man, Igor, sounded interested and asked where we met for church, we proceeded to give him a invitation because that is how we work. All of our lessons for this week came in the last 2 days! which was amazing. SOme of our investigators show hope of progressing, please pray for them. Especially Lena, and Anton.  Anton is way cool, he speaks english well.  The problem: His entire family is Russian Orthodox priests, he wanted to learn more, but his Brother took away his book of mormon, he got it back but is afraid to read because of his wife.  He still comes to english classes, and we told him we dont want to make problems for him at home so now we are on a program with the new testament. We are reading one chapter everyday together. we hope he sticks with it, hopefully it will bring the spirit into his home. Elder biesinger and I played tennis again today and that was a blast, we are getting pretty good.  We have a potential investigator that owns the court.  Maybe if he gets baptized, we can play for free(Thats a Joke, Nothing is free in Ukraine(No they dont have drinking fountains)) I love you all!
Hey Buddy,

I can't believe how fast the weeks fly by!  It is June 20!!!  We are coming up on 10 months out!!!  That is just crazy talk!

We had a fun busy week.  I took the kids to the cabin for a couple days and we had a blast.  Today for Father's Day we took all the kids up to the cabin to visit Grandpa.  It was great that Dad actually wanted to do that and chose it.  We spent some time talking about Grandpa and Grandma's Father's and then also about our own.  It was a special moment.  They are all in watching game 7 of the NBA championship now.  We had the t-boys all weekend and it has been a lot of fun.  Ethan likes his job at Cowabunga Bay.  Josh worked every day this week at his new job at Training Table.

We have been spending time getting Josh and Jordy ready for trek this week.  They are having youth Ma and Pa's so that will be interesting!  Jessica Ralphs and Brayden Gibbons will be their's.  They put Thomas in their group too for help with Jordy.  I hope it goes ok!

Grandma and Grandpa have their Farewell next week!  They are getting really nervous about leaving I think.  Well, let me rephrase that...Grandma is getting really nervous about leaving her grandkids for a year!  I am really excited for them and even a little jealous.  Having two sons serving missions makes me want to serve one as well!

Everyone is doing pretty good and we are all just enjoying summer.  We are having the Martineau party tomorrow here at the house.  It is instead of the bear lake trip since we aren't doing that this year.

I am so curious about everything you are doing right now!  I really need to know if you are showering in that awful water?!?

Dakkon made it out to San Antonio this week.  I sent a few of the pics that the mission president sent us.  His mission president gets changed in a couple weeks so that will be interesting.  He looks like he is having a great time.  We were able to talk to him the other day on the phone when he was at the airport.  He sounded pretty emotional and nervous.  I felt like you sounded super pumped and just ready for the adventure and to share the gospel.  I think it only being 3 weeks from leaving home left him a little more emotional.

I miss you so much.  When we have all the kids together it is so strange to be missing you and now Dakkon too.  It is weird to be counting to 8 instead of 10.  Dad was saying last night how he misses having everyone together and we realized it could be years until we are all together again.  It is so strange, but also such a blessing to have all you wonderful boys serving the Lord.  The best case is that everyone serves and it truly is years before we are all together again.  I am really proud of you.  I love you so much.

So questions this week-
1-seriously...the water?  How do you shower?
2-How is the apartment?
3-What do you cook in?
4-Are you still eating really healthy and working out a lot?
5-I really need to get out your birthday package so I REALLY need some ideas for a gift for you.  What can I get you?
6-What food-poptarts-treats-peanut butter etc do you want?
7-How is the mission work going?
8-How is English class?
9-Do you do the activity nights?
10-PICTURES!!!!  Please...
11-Audio recordings?
12-Special message for me.
13-Are you still happy and positive?
14-Anything we can pray for specifically?
15-Favorite things about Sumi?
16-Are you hoping for another transfer there?

Well,  I love you so much.  Thanks for being amazing.  I miss you.  Work hard, stay faithful, stay positive, pray always!!!

You can do this...you can do hard things.  I believe in you!  No one is perfect so don't be so hard on yourself.  You are doing amazing!

Love you
Mom

Yes we shower, no the water is not always that bad, it is usually clear, thats the worst its been.  We do dishes with filtered water, as well as cook with filtered water.  The apartment is big, but not super nice, its harder to keep clean, but it is definitely not a bad apartment by Ukrainian standards.  Eating Healthy Yes, Working out, yes until I got sick, we are going to start playing tennis for our work out time everyother day.I could really use some AXE messy hair gel(The yellow and black one). Black Nike socks, Vanilla extract.  Dont worry about it too much, I dont need a huge package, I would rather have you put money in my account so I can send you home some really cool ukrainian stuff, they have tons of cultural dress type things, the little girls wear tons of flowers in their hair all the time, There is always ukrainian candies and chocolate I can send home, as well as tea shirts that I pick up at second hands. The missionary work is going good.  English class is extremely successful,  No activity nights.  Elder Biesinger is on it, his camera is still better than my nice one, and it is smaller.  I love you and I will send the messages. Still happy and positive, IT is way clean hear and I love it so much, people will actually talk to us. Just for our investigators, in general. Yeah I want to stay here until next april. I bought a fanny pack, its pretty convienient for everything.  I am so happy you are all a part of my family I am almost done meailnig now because my screen is flipped upside down and its kind of hard to read and type.

A bus to Dnepr...

Week 42

This is Elder Jensen, I am your sons' Zone Leader. I'm just emailing because we had a Mission Conference yesterday in Dnepro, so your sons are going to be on a bus all day today traveling back to Цуми. They will be emailing tomorrow.

You are all the best men in the World! I am especially grateful for all of my fathers in my Life: Daddy Jake, Curtis, Mikey, Grandpa Edmunds, Adam, Clint, Matt, Jesse, Grandpa Jorgensen, Trent, George, Joe, Kirk, Ben, James, Great Grandpa. You are all the best!

Well a lot of stuff happened this week. The big thing was a mission conference with a General Authority presiding.  The little thing is the 10 hour bus ride to get to it.  And the missed bus back from it.  Other than those minor difficulties it was a really good time.  We were all on our best behavior and the General authorities loved it, we hope that that will stick around for a while.  It was funny, Elder Hallstrom exclaimed "Are you like this everyweek?" I thought silently to my self, well no, but we should be.  so hopefully we and the branches can retain that spirit of reverence.  Elder Biesinger stayed in Dnepr on saturday and we lived with Elder Jeffery and Elder Cannon, they were in for a surprise.  One of our investigators brought us a gift and told us it was really good.  He said, it didnt have Coffee or black green or white tea in it so we can drink it.  We tried it that night, and may I just say, WOW. I have never tasted something more putrid, I would rather eat a bowl of the soggiest cheerios, followed by a drink of rotten tomatoe juice.  After discovering this stuff, we made it our prank drink, the plan:Talk it up to other missionaries we stay with, and then video them as they take their first sip, the reaction is priceless every time.  Elder Jeffery said "This is literally the worst." we just all laughed at him, Elder cannon was in on it, so he was prepared.  By the way Elder Cannon is the best(Like if there is a polar opposite to the drink described above, its Elder Cannon), I forgot pjs when I packed, he found out, and literally gave me a pair of pajama pants, and said "You can keep em, I dont need em." <3
We learned a lot from the general authority and I was inspired to be better.  We hope we can apply his teachings fully here in Sumy.  Well I love all of you!I cant send pictures until I find a new sim card reader, so you are all out of luck, Elder Biesinger probably sent some, and his mom and my mom are tight.

Hey bud,

I am so excited to hear all about the meeting with Elder Hallstom.  I bet it was amazing for all of you in the mission.  Sister Sullivan posted a great picture from it on Facebook today.  It was awesome to see your whole mission together.

We had a great week.  Sis had her dance recital yesterday so that was super cute.  She did great in it.  Allie and Lyndsee had to do a staff dance too.  IT was really good.  She will have 2 more weeks of dance and then be done for the summer.  Next year she will move up a class.

Jordy had his last baseball games.  They ended up winning second place, which was awesome.  The entire season they had to play teams that were super leagues because there was only 2 other teams that were rec league.  So it was a great season, with a lot of wins against teams that have been playing together for a long time.

Mikey put Josh on a workout/diet plan for the summer.  They wake up at 6:00 am everyday and do a workout.  He is only allowed 1 treat per week, can't go back for seconds and has to eat small meals several times a day.  He has done really well with it.  He hopes to grow more (he is about 5' 8.5" now) and thin out over the summer.  He is considering the Naval Academy pretty seriously as well.  His mood and temperament have continued to improve and he is doing really well.  He got a job at Training Table and starts tomorrow.  He is really excited about it.

Jacob is on that super league basketball team so it's over for a month but they are still practicing.  He will start again in July.  He has been helping Grandpa get the cabin ready for them to be gone.

It's Father's Day next week so remember to do a shout out to dad/grandpa in your email today.

Cam is doing well and glad to be out of school.  He has been pretty healthy for a while now which is awesome!

Ethan received his Patriarchal blessing today.  Originally he just invited Dad to go because he didn't think Margaret would handle me being there very well.  He called about an hour before he was getting it and asked for Dad and me to come to it.  Dad asked, "What does Margaret think of that?"  Ethan responded with, "It's not about her, it's about me and I want Julie here."  So that was just awesome!!  The blessing went great.  It was clear Margaret was not happy about my presence but she didn't make a scene so that is good.

I miss you like crazy, but I am so glad you are serving!!!  I look forward to your emails all week!!!  I love reading them and sharing them with people.  I love reading Elder Besinger's emails too!  It is so fun to hear what you both have to say and put the picture together a little better.  I love the name The Shire.  It makes it sound so cute and quaint!  It sounds like the branch there is awesome! (From Elder B. email)  I am so glad you are having this experience in Ukraine.  I think it is so awesome that you can speak Russian...I mean seriously how awesome is that!!!

Your package came yesterday so THANK YOU!!!   I love the nesting doll, egg, and hair clip!  Josh took over the t-shirts and Kaestli claimed all the toys except for the frisbee thing.  Cam got that one.  I love the letters so much.  You say such nice things in your letters and emails and it makes me so happy!!  Thank you for all you do for me and all you have done for our entire family!

Questions for today,
1-How was the GA meeting?  Did you get to talk with him personally at all?  What was it like?
2-How is the branch you are working with?
3-How are you traveling down for these meetings?
4-Are you still enjoying Sumi?
5-Are you still happy and positive?
6-Requests for a birthday gift package,  I really need to get this done!  Pop tarts again? Any other food?  Any other needs?
7-Don't forget an email to Dad for Father's Day.
8-Special message for me.
9-What is your favorite thing about E. B.?
10-What is your favorite thing about Sumi?
11-What do you miss about Left Bank?
12-Is it hard to be so isolated from the rest of the mission?
13-Do you have any new investigators?
14-Will there be any service opportunities there?

Well,  I just love you so much!!!!  Thanks for being one of my best friends!  I am so grateful for you!

Love You!
Mom

GA meeting was good, it was like 5 seconds but yeah.  The branch is small but good, 30 active members, they are way into doing missionary work. Travelling was by bus, we think we will start to use trains, tavelling sucks.  Yes sumy is the best! Still happy and positive, but I think I am getting sick.  Yeah I would love Measuring cups, I need more of those scripture markers you sent, those are awesome, The protein bars that were mint were literally the best, they tasted like york peppermint patties.  Today We are buying some tennis stuff, becasue we are all alone and need stuff to do on Pday.  I love you a lot becasue you are my mom and you are literally the best.  I am really happy that Ethan wanted you at the patriarchal blessing, everyone is way jealous that you try to send mail weekly.  Elder Biesinger has an awesome sense of humor, and we dont ever fight, it is like elder schweighardt and I.  The people, Parks, and how darn clean it is compared to Left bank.  My old kitchen and clean water from the tap.  Not really except for when the whole mission comes together and we travel for 10 hours, other than that it is actually kind of nice.  Yeah just one, he is a referral from Vika, one of the members, we hope he will really start to progress.  Yes, the first week we had one where we went and painted at a childrens hospital, the branch president is awesome, the branch is really awesome for missionary work, our branch missionary took us tracting the other day.

Hey buddy,

So 2 things...First I love that you had your zone leader send an email telling me that you were on a bus and wouldn't be able to email today.  Was that your idea or E. B.?  Some of the other moms were freaking out because they didn't get an email and we were able to tell them why.  It made me realize you probably went out of your way to give your zone leader our emails so that we wouldn't worry.  Thank you for doing that!!!  It was really sweet and thoughtful.  And you are right...I would have been a mess not getting an email.

Second...Your water situation?!?  Elder B. sent a horrifying picture of brown water and said that it is your tap water.  Is this true?  How are you showering?  How are you washing your dishes, eating, drinking etc???  Don't drink it, let it get in your mouth, or wash your dishes with it!!!

Love you tons!!!  Dakkon leaves Wednesday for Texas!!!  Wahoo!

Love ya
Mom

Oh yeah, the water sucks, but we buy clean water,(it comes to our house in 5 gallon things) so all is well.  Tell Josh to check his email! Love you.

Sumy!!!

Week 41

Wow this was a big week.  We met at elder biesingers apartment on Monday, and the mission driver drove us up with a few other missionaries to Karkiv. So we were half way to Sumi, we stayed in a Hotel there, and enjoyed the relaxation program sister sullivan gave us.  (Elder biesinger enjoyed laughing at me as I got charlie horse after charlie horse in my legs from doing what she said) "Feel how tense your legs are, feel the pain, focus and study that tension" I can tell you I felt the pain.  We had breakfast at the hotel, and then we left for Sumi.  The Kyiv elders showed us a round a bit, and told us important stuff, and then they left the next morning.  Sumi is a very small City, it is the same size as left bank, but we only have 200000 people living here.  THe population is young because many are here for school.  I love it here.  THer are statues, and parks, and Trees EVERYWHERE!!.  Elder Biesinger and I have renamed the country side around it to the shire.  The branch is just amazing and so eager to do missionary work, for a city this size it is a big branch, 30 active members, with 10-11 melchezidek priesthood holders, it almost felt like a normal priesthood meeting on sunday.  We have no youth, but we have 3 20 year olds, that we teach institute to.  We had to go down to poltava for a zone conference, and the bus back to here was miserable, it was a late bus, and the bus wasnt a bus it was a marshutka, and elder biesinger couldnt stand up strate for 2 hours, and when I finnaly got the chance to sit my knees told me if I ever abused them like that again they would find a new body.  But after 4 hours, we finally made it home and slept.  Everything else was good!  I love it here and everything is pretty!

Alright!!!!  I want the details of this mission Recon in the northlands!  I have been so anxious all week to hear all the crazy experiences you have had this last week!

First off for us.  Obviously we spent the week in Lake Powell!  We got home a few hours ago.  I am exhausted.  It was a blast though.  The kids all got along and improved in their skills.  Jacob and Jordy are getting great air on the wakeboard now.  Josh is getting a lot more air now too.  Jordy jumped in the lake with his phone in his pocket...so that wasn't great.  When we got there last week the house boat wasn't even in the water.  It took a couple days to get everything sorted out.  We stayed in a ghetto rental until it was ready.  It seemed like everything broke, mostly because it did.  The generator, one of the engines, the hot water heater, the ice machine, the boat got a crack in it...not sure how, we had to come back in early limping on one engine.  It was a lot of hiccups...but no one was hurt or died, so it was a success.  We did have fun though even with all the issues.

Dad's friends were supposed to be picked up at the dock at 6:00 pm....they were over 2.5 hours late so Dad was late getting back.  Me, Grandpa, and Mikey had to go looking for them at 10:30 at night in the dark.  We saw a boat we thought was them and went closer...we couldn't see anything but the boat lights.  We passed what looked like a zombie fisherman that only moaned and groaned when we approached and then mumbled "I can't see anything".  Me and Mikey were completely freaked out.  It was like the seen in LOST when Sawyer and Michael are on the raft and approach the boat.  We were freaking!!!  We finally found dad and the friends.  It was a little nerve racking!

The T-boys are all getting a lot better in their skills as well.  We had a fun time with everyone.  We missed our missionaries though!!!!  So glad to have 2 missionaries serving the Lord though.  We are both really happy about it and really proud of both of you.

This week is Great Grandpa's birthday...85 I think.  We are going to Copperton Park for a dinner.  Kaestli also has her dance recital on Saturday.  Jacob and Cam have school tomorrow and Tuesday and then everyone is out for the entire summer.  We are super excited.

Alright...questions

1-EVERY Detail of SUMY!!!!
--how is the branch?
--how is your apartment??
--how is the weather???
---what is it like? city? country? pretty? ugly?
--how are the people??
--how was it to be trained by the other missionaries?
--how is your companionship?
--what direction did President Sullivan give you and E.B?
--Is it lonely and scary being the only missionaries and no district?
--do you have a zone at least?
--how often will you go back down to dneper?
--how often will you get your mail?
--Will E.B. workout with you??
--Are you happy??  Are you positive?  Are you SAFE???
--Are you so excited about this new adventure?
--How did you get up there? How will you get back down?
--Is it scary to be that close to Russia?  How close to Russia are you?

2-Do you need anything?
3-Do you care if we use your phone, and I'll get you a new one when you get back?
4-What do you want in your birthday package?  I need to get going on it since you are so far away now.

Well,  I miss you like crazy and I am seriously so proud of you.  I know you can handle anything that comes your way.  I am glad that I know you are being watched over by Daddy Jake too.  I love you very much.

Please be careful and safe!
Love Mom

Oh boy you have a lot of questions.  The branch has 120 members total, 30 active.  We had 10-11 melchezidek priesthood holders yesterday, they are all way eager to do missionary work.  The apartment is bigger than the last one, but not as convienient as the last one, we had better stuff at the old one.  The pans are better here though.  The weather is just like anywhere else in Ukraine, Humid, and warm, until July when it will be Humid and hot.  It changes pretty quick here.  City in the city, country in the country, i didnt tell too much about left bank, but sumi is way better, safer, cleaner, happier, younger.  The people are young and generally nice, we met a satanist yesterday, he was kind of a turd.  It was good, they were sad to leave.  We have a zone, and they gave us a district, which is kind of pointless. "How can we help you? Well we have these problems, but you are 4.5 hours away, sooooooo.... we will just get over it." Companionship is good, of course, we are brothers, we were born together. He told us he trusted us, told us he actually knew almost nothing about our area except, where it is, and that there is a branch. IT is kind of fun to be alone, we dont have to worry about going into someone elses boundaries.  Only when we have a really good reason to, like interviews with president, or mission conferences.  Nothing more.  We go this weekend, but we probably wont go back to dnepr for another 2-3 transfers after that, IF we get transferred.  As often as someone brings it from dnepr to karkov, and as often as we get brought into kharkov for zone training, so once a transfer at least. We havent worked out much, we went for a run this morning.  I am happy, positive and safer than i was in leftbank.  I am very excited, We have to take buses, but the mission driver drove us up here. NO its not scary.  ukraine has an army bigger than russias right now so dont worry too much.  Could you send me some AxE messy hair gel in the next package? Of course you can, I cant really stop you can I?  Yeah the hair gel, I cant think of a ton else, my package to you is on the way with some goodies in it.

Love you!!!!!
